Devils to begin extension talks with Timo Meier this week, report says

The Devils will begin contract discussions with star forward Timo Meier this week, general manager Tom Fitzgerald said in an interview with NHL.com Tuesday.

Meier, acquired in a blockbuster deal between the Devils and the San Jose Sharks in late February, is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1 and has a $10 million qualifying offer. Speaking with NHL.com at the NHL Scouting Combine, Fitzgerald seemed adamant about ironing out a long-term deal with Meier's agent Claude Lemieux before the winger becomes an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
